Salt, sand and outdoor mechanisms
The mechanisms that suffer most here are not always those of front doors, but everything that stays outside: garden gates, shed padlocks, garage door locks, shutter boxes, seafront letterboxes. The sea air leaves a film of salt that holds moisture, and sand blown in from the beach or the paths ends up inside the cylinders. The failure rarely arrives all at once: the key catches, you have to try twice, you get into the habit of jiggling it, then one morning the cylinder no longer engages at all.
Exposure varies from one neighbourhood to the next, and you can hear it in the calls. In L’Aiguillon and along the quays, the locks on waterside entrances and premises take the spray head-on. In Le Moulleau, the frontage open to the ocean adds sand-laden wind. In the Ville d’Hiver, the wooded dune shelters from the wind but keeps a constant damp under the pines, which affects the timber of the joinery more than the metal of the mechanisms. The same symptom therefore does not have the same cause depending on the address.
The faults that wait for the property to be reopened
The scenario is a classic in spring: you arrive on Friday evening, the door opens, but it then refuses to lock properly. The timber has swollen over the winter, the strike plate no longer lines up, one point of the multipoint lock is forcing. The first instinct is often to push harder, which tires the rod linkage and turns an adjustment into a replacement. The second, far more useful, is to try every fastening — front door, service door, shutters, garage, garden gate — on the very first day, while there is still time left before the stay ends.
The same applies when closing the house up. A lock that catches in October will catch more in April, after a winter of damp air in an unheated property. Checking the clearance around the door, the tightness of the strike plates and the condition of the outdoor entrances before leaving avoids discovering the problem on your return, arms full. As France Serrure works throughout the Gironde, the travel arrangements for the Bassin are stated when you call, the quote comes before the work, and a detailed invoice is issued once the job is done.
