Town house or single-storey suburban house: two unrelated jobs
In the centre-bourg and along the old Bayonne road that crosses the commune, there are still terraced houses whose door opens straight onto the pavement. Original timber joinery, sizes that are rarely standard, a door frame bedded into a thick wall: this configuration lends itself well to reinforcement, provided the measurements are taken precisely and you accept that an off-the-shelf door set will not necessarily fit. The quality of the surrounding masonry is a real asset here for anchoring.
The estate house poses the opposite problem. Its front door, often PVC or aluminium, is already the most resistant opening in the house, while the rear elevation lines up a sliding patio door, French windows and a side door. Reinforcing the front door in those conditions amounts to strengthening the point that is already strong. The assessment therefore starts with a full circuit of the house, which frequently leads to spreading the effort somewhere other than the main door alone.
What the street sees, and what the co-owned building allows
Gradignan has some remarkable historic buildings, starting with the priory of Cayac, a medieval stopping place on the pilgrim route to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. As soon as a change to the external appearance of a door is visible from public space, a prior works declaration may be required, and particular rules can apply near a protected building. The commune's planning department can say what applies at a specific address: it is better to ask the question before ordering a door.
In the recent blocks built along the roads towards Talence and around the centre, the flat entrance door is generally private property, but the co-ownership rules may require visual consistency on the landing. Renovation reinforcement changes the appearance of the door leaf; a certified security door set replaces it entirely. In both cases, obtaining the building managing agent's (syndic) agreement beforehand avoids having to put things back later. The commune also has a few older properties set back from the road, where bespoke work is often the only option.
