Openings that fit no standard size
The doors of the historic centre adapted to the walls, not the other way round. Oversized leaves, glazed fanlights, double-leaf carriage doors, frames bedded into the stone long ago: a certified security door set of standard dimensions has no place there. The survey determines everything else, and it is done on site, checking the condition of the timber, the supporting masonry and the plumb. Depending on what that survey reveals, reinforcing the existing door may prove more sensible than a complete replacement.
The trade-off is rather favourable: sound stone masonry offers an anchorage few recent buildings can match, provided the fitting is carried out by someone who knows how to work with that material. Where the stone is crumbling or the frame is rotten, repairing the support is part of the job and not a hidden extra. We say so beforehand, in a detailed quote, rather than discovering it once the old door has been removed and the home stands open to the street.
What planning rules may have to say about your façade
The centre of Libourne has protected buildings, starting with the porte du Grand Port, a remnant of the old ramparts on the bank of the Isle. Some of the surrounding streets therefore fall within a zone where altering the external appearance visible from public space may be subject to prior notification and to the opinion of the Architecte des Bâtiments de France. That does not rule out a reinforcement project, but it does govern its finish, its timescale and sometimes the principle itself.
The practical step remains simple: before choosing a model, ask the town's planning department, giving your exact address, and they will tell you which rules apply to your façade. In the residential areas of Garderose, Épinette or over towards Condat, the question generally does not arise and the choice becomes purely technical: condition of the door frame, nature of the wall, consistency with the other openings of the house.
