Finding the right wall before choosing the safe
The first question is not the size of the safe but the nature of what it will be fixed to. Suburban Pessac was largely built in concrete blockwork, with lightweight internal partitions and a limited number of genuinely load-bearing walls. A built-in safe means locating those walls and having enough thickness to work with; failing that, a free-standing safe anchored into the concrete slab is often the more honest answer. That survey is carried out on site, before anything is ordered.
The location then deserves to be discussed beyond the usual reflexes. The attached garage and the shed at the bottom of the garden, so convenient in a house, are both bad ideas: barely heated, prone to damp, and the first places to be visited. A utility room off the kitchen, a cupboard backing onto a load-bearing wall or a windowless hallway generally offer a better compromise between discretion, a solid fixing and access that stays practical day to day. An awkward safe always ends up going unused.
Shops in the centre, businesses in Bersol, wine estates
Professional users are well represented in the town: shops in the streets of the centre, companies and business units in the Bersol park, practices and professional firms. Their needs are not those of a household: the day's takings to be put away before closing, duplicate keys and fobs for a whole building, contracts and registers. The location has to stay out of sight of customers, in a room with controlled access, and be known only to authorised staff.
Pessac also has the distinctive feature of housing wine estates enclosed within the urban fabric, starting with the properties that gave the Pessac-Léognan appellation its name. These sites combine a reception building, offices, cellars and outbuildings, with numerous key sets and access shared between several parties. The safe there often serves less to protect valuables than to centralise keys and documents, which directly changes both the selection criteria and where it should be placed.
