The wall first, the steel second
The town's detached housing stock was built in waves: 1960s to 1980s construction in the old cores and their fringes, more recent estates on the edge of the woods, new schemes along the roads towards the city. The frames you find range from timber surrounds bedded into rendered blockwork to aluminium assemblies face-fixed onto external insulation. So before any talk of reinforcement, the door frame, its fixings and the surrounding opening are checked: that is where the real resistance lies.
On recently completed houses, the front door is already a multipoint set and reinforcing it adds little. The effort is better spent on the openings that have been left behind: the side door from the utility room, the connecting door between the garage and the hallway, the large living-room patio door onto the garden. A front entrance made highly resistant while the garage opens in seconds simply moves the point of attack a few metres, without changing the level of protection of the house at all.
What your estate may already have decided
A large part of the town's residential areas came out of estate developments, often with a set of covenants, an estate regulation and sometimes a residents' association that is still active. These documents frequently govern the appearance of fences, gates and street-facing elevations, colours included. Before changing the visible look of a front door, it is wise to read them again and, where relevant, to ask the body that manages the estate, rather than discovering the restriction once the work is done.
On top of that comes ordinary planning law: altering the external appearance of a building that is visible from public space may require a prior declaration of works. The town's planning department will tell you what applies at your address. In practice, many doors here sit under a canopy or a porch, which leaves real freedom over the finish — and, incidentally, is a reminder that an intruder would also be working there out of sight of the street.
