When several people have to get into a relative's home
Around Langon, the health hub of the Sud-Gironde, many older people live alone in the town or in the surrounding communes, with a succession of people coming to them: home help, nurse, meal deliveries, family passing through. The usual solution is a key safe fixed near the door, whose code ends up known to everyone and is almost never changed. Named access, granted and then withdrawn, brings order to all that without obliging anyone to chase after a set of keys.
The access log that comes with this equipment does deserve a proper conversation, though. It records who came in and at what time: in an occupied home, that is information about the person's life, not just about the door. The visitors and the occupant alike need to know that it exists and what it is for. And a word, finally, on what a connected motor does not do: it changes nothing about the strength of the door or of the cylinder. Ease of use and protection against break-ins remain two separate subjects.
An old door and a damp valley floor will not take just anything
Before ordering anything, you need to know what sits behind the key. On a lever lock or a surface-mounted mechanism in the old centre, a motor designed for a European cylinder cannot be fitted without replacing the mechanism first, which changes the nature of the project. On a shielded multipoint lock in a more recent house, it is the cover and the clearance available on the inside that decide. In a rented property we favour a reversible fitting mounted on the existing cylinder, without drilling the door.
The environment counts just as much. A door exposed to the rain, a gate standing at the end of a drive, a ground floor close to the river: damp and swings in temperature are the enemies of this equipment. Check the stated weather rating, the permitted temperature range, and above all the backup provided when the battery runs low — a mechanical cylinder, an emergency power supply. Check the network coverage at the exact spot where the door is, too, before relying on remote control: it cannot be guessed from a product sheet.
