Timber on the move in the low-lying parts of the commune
The commune slopes down towards the Garonne and is crossed by the Eau Bourde, which comes in from Gradignan. In these low-lying areas the air stays damp for a good part of the year and timber joinery feels it: the door leaf swells by a few millimetres, the bolt no longer lines up with the strike plate, and you have to push or lift the door to lock it. The movement becomes a habit, nobody pays attention to it any more, until the day the rod linkage strains and then gives way.
The useful reflex is not to blame the lock until something has proved it guilty. Adjusting a strike plate, resetting the hinges or reworking the door frame settles a good share of these situations, whereas fitting a new mechanism to a misaligned door simply subjects it to the strain that finished off the previous one. So we look first at how the door sits in its frame, before opening any discussion about replacing parts.
The garage, the pedestrian gate and the service door age faster
These are the openings you use every day without ever really looking at them. An up-and-over garage door operated twice a day for thirty years, a pedestrian gate exposed to driving rain, a service door whose key lives outside in a flowerpot: the cylinders clog up, the springs tire, the bolts wear. On an enclosed plot these access points matter just as much as the main entrance, since they are what controls getting onto the land.
An honest diagnosis separates what belongs to locksmithing from what belongs to the gate motor or the joinery. A seized cylinder, a worn spindle, a misaligned strike plate, a broken bolt can all be dealt with. A dead gate motor or a distorted sectional door panel are another trade's work, and we would rather say so than start a repair that would not hold. In every case we explain what we have found, the quote is drawn up before the work and the invoice issued afterwards.
