What a family house's door will take, and what it will not
Many houses in the commune had their original door replaced during a renovation with PVC or aluminium joinery, often together with a glazed side panel or a fanlight to bring light into the hall. That configuration changes the conversation. Reinforcement fitted to the existing leaf assumes a solid panel and a sound frame; with this kind of joinery, the subject shifts towards a complete set, or towards other answers. And the fixed glazing remains a weak point whatever is done to the leaf itself.
The surrounding structure counts just as much as the door. In local estate construction, the frame is bedded into a masonry reveal sometimes lined with insulation and plasterboard, which gives the illusion of a thickness that is not there. Whether reinforcement holds depends on the quality of that anchoring: the forces of an attempt are transferred to the fixings, and therefore to the wall. That is why we examine the reveal, the threshold and the hinges on site before writing anything into a quote.
The estate rules come before the catalogue
A large share of Villenave's housing was built as estates, and many of them have a set of covenants or a residents' association governing the appearance of façades, the colours and sometimes the fences. Before starting work visible from the road, read those documents again: they were handed to you when you bought. In an apartment block, the co-ownership rules may require the doors onto communal areas to match; if you rent, the owner's written agreement is obtained beforehand, not afterwards.
Then there is the question of consistency, which is particularly clear in a house. Reinforcing the entrance of a house whose living-room patio door opens onto an enclosed, unlit garden moves the problem round the back rather than solving it. The same reasoning applies to an ageing garage door that connects directly with the house. We prefer to set priorities: the genuinely weak point first, the front door next, with a detailed quote setting out each item and an invoice issued at the end of the job.
